Poor mental health and illness is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. Much of this evidence has shown links between mental health issues such as depression and anxiety with work stress (Dewa and McDaid, 2011). In light of this evidence and the legal frameworks such as the Equality Act (2010), there is a responsibility on employers not only to put in reasonable adjustments for those with disabilities, but to maintain a healthy workplace for all staff as a preventative initiative.
Sickness absence cost employers an average of £522 for each employee per year. This amounts to an estimated annual cost of £13 billion for the UK economy as a whole (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development). Integrating a workplace wellbeing intervention will not only reduce the amount of absenteeism through illness but will support with a quicker recovery for those returning to work.
As a Psychologist with a specialism in Health and Wellbeing I can offer support at an individual level (health assessments, biopsychosocial therapeutic approaches and behaviour change interventions) to company level (reviewing polices around health & wellbeing, reasonable adjustments and training) to ensure a healthy workplace for all.
